Dos And Don’ts When Cleaning Your Memory Foam Travel Neck Pillow
Memory foam travel pillows are currently one of the most sought after travel accessories for many people. The neck pillow may not look much but it can make a huge difference when it comes to traveling in vehicles like cars, planes, buses, trains, and more.
There are also certain people who use this type of pillow for additional support when relaxing at home, those who have degenerative disc problems, and even those who just came out of surgery.
A lot of people prefer memory foam pillows because it is known to be snugly and can easily conform to its users neck. Most memory foam pillows are created using polyurethane which is a material that has the ability to react to body heat. This is why the pillow magically conforms to its user’s contour and goes back to its original shape when not in use.
Although this neck pillow offers great comfort and support to a lot of people, it can get a bit tricky to clean up. A memory pillow has certain guidelines that you need to adhere to prevent its natural composition from breaking down.
Here are some of the things you need to avoid when cleaning your memory foam travel pillow;
Don’t get the memory foam wet
A lot of people make the mistake of putting their pillow in the washing machine or washing it by hand. Please note that memory foam is not made to get wet. Getting the pillow wet may result in the breakdown of its composition that will ultimately result in the pillow losing its properties.
Don’t use materials that are too harsh
The usual stain removers or scrubbing the foam too roughly can also potentially break the material. Although not really recommended, you can still use certain stain removers but make sure that it isn’t too harsh.
Is there a way to clean the foam without damaging it?
Don’t worry, although water can’t be used to clean the foam there are still ways for you to keep your travel pillow clean and free of odor.
Here are some of the ways that you can clean your neck pillow;
Removing stains on your pillow
To remove stains simply create a mixture of cold water and mild soap. Once that’s done get a clean cotton towel and dip it into the mixture. It is important that you wring out the excess moisture from the towel to prevent damaging the foam.
You can then slowly and gently dab the towel on the foam. We suggest that you start from the outside of the stain working your way inward. Once that’s done you can then dry the pillow in a place with good circulation.
When you’re regularly using your memory foam travel pillow, there are instances when it may start to smell. If you find yourself in this situation you can actually make use of baking soda or a little sunlight.
You can sprinkle some baking soda on the foam and let it sit for a day or so. Once that’s done you can then gently shake the pillow or vacuum it to remove the baking soda from the pillow. Make sure that you remove all remnants of the baking soda before using your pillow again.
If you’re not too fond of using baking soda, you can also allow your pillow to sit directly in the sunlight for a few days or so. The sunlight plus the warm breeze can help freshen up your pillow in no time.
As you can see, even without using water you can still keep your travel pillow fresh and tidy. Aside from the tips above, we also suggest that you make use of a travel pillow cover to prevent the foam from getting dirty. Again we stress the importance of not getting the memory foam wet. Getting the foam wet may destroy the properties that makes the pillow what it is.
